As a twenty-year-old girl, I get asked a lot about what I want to be when I’m older. I understand why folks ask, but I never know what to say. I try to explain that I cannot see into the future, and will probably just take whatever opportunities I can, but they still look unsatisfied. I then try to defend myself, talk about my skills, my time spent thinking about the world, everything I learned this last year, I try to present my view on things, but these are just the ramblings of a twenty-year old girl. So, one step short of ignoring the next person to ask me this question and hurling some polemic their way, I thought that I must find some non-violent solution to this problem of mine. So I started this blog. When I’m older I want to be a good writer, so I better start doing something about it.
In a way they were right, I think a lot, I read a lot, I talk even more than both of these combined, but I have trouble writing enough, doing enough, and making enough. I created this platform, partly as a chronicle for myself, partly as a way to reinstate the joy I got from posting on Tiktok, but overall as a way to hold myself accountable.
For this blog expect ideas like those I shared on Tiktok about philosophy, classics, ethics, and history. I also want to hone a format for interviews – I love talking to people and think it is the greatest teacher. I’ve been reading Herodotus over the new year (the man who documented the life of my namesake) and going nuts over the fact that he is the earliest relativist philosopher in the western world (maybe the whole world). There is a likelihood that an upcoming post will be about what we can learn from Herodotus, aka the father of history.
And regarding poetics, I do hope to post fiction here too! In order to be respected by my classical heroes I obviously have to be a skilled storyteller (which requires practice) and so if I end up writing anything good it can also go here.
So If you missed Philosophy girl….. she’s back!
